What to Look for When Buying Furniture

Choosing the Right Pieces for Your Home

The furniture you choose for your home is a major investment that you’ll be living with for a long time. Before you pick out the pieces that you’ll be sleeping in, sitting on, and storing your things in, take some time to think about your priorities, budget, and living space.

Know Your Space

One of the most important things to keep in mind is how much space you have to work with, and how the pieces you select will fit into that space. Before furniture shopping, measure each room (or, if you haven’t moved in yet, look at your apartment floor plan) so you can decide how to configure furniture. Remember to factor in how you’ll get furniture through doorways or stairwells.

Best Quality for Your Budget

When your budget is limited, it’s tempting to pick the cheapest option available, but that can end up costing you more in the long run if the item is of poor quality and not built to last. Figure out what you can reasonably afford, and decide how much you can invest in pieces you won’t need to replace. If it fits within your budget, real wood furniture will be higher quality and last much longer than cheaper materials like particleboard or veneer.

Things to Keep in Mind When Buying Second Hand

Second hand furniture shopping is a great way to acquire quality pieces without breaking the bank. Whether you purchase from a resale shop or directly from the owner, it’s good to know a few things about both the item and where it’s coming from:

  • Was it kept in a smoke-free environment?

  • Are all of the original parts intact and included, such as drawer hardware and doorknobs?

  • Is there water damage or other damage to the finish?

  • If upholstered, has the item absorbed any odors?

  • Is it free of insects and insect damage?

  • If it needs some minor repair or cosmetic work, will you be willing and able to do it?

Read the Reviews

Always do your research! When considering purchasing mass-produced furniture, see what the reviews say. You’ll get an idea of durability, any common problems, and overall quality. For furniture that comes unassembled, you’ll have an idea of how easy or difficult it is to put together, and how well it holds up once it’s assembled.
